COMMUNITY YOUTH MURAL - 2025
The Community Mural Project is sponsored by River City Youth Opps and will be created at Our Place in the West Central neighborhood of Spokane. This is a collective impact art project where HeARTworks will involve professional mural artists, teaching artists, arts organizations and students from K-12 in the W. Central SPS schools. High school students from the Community School will be coached by professional mural artists from the community, where they will learn valuable skills in mural design, techniques, and the implementation of mural-making.
Additionally, students from Holmes and Audubon Elementary Schools will participate through our after-school arts program, the Spokane Teaching Artist Mentorship Program (STAMP). In this program, student teaching artists from Eastern Washington University (EWU) will work alongside the elementary students, providing mentorship and guidance as they explore the mural’s themes and generate imagery. These collaborative sessions will allow students to engage deeply with the creative process, while also gaining insight into the broader themes of community, ecosystems, and cultural identity.
HeARTworks will leverage these partnerships to guide the students in the exploration of the interconnectedness of local food systems, ecosystems, and cultural identity. The Story Circle methodology will engage participants in storytelling, movement, and visual arts exercises, allowing them to express personal and group narratives that will inspire the mural’s themes and imagery. Students will learn about Native plants in the region, explore positive characteristics that mirror community interdependence, and reflect on Our Place’s vital role in Spokane’s urban landscape.
